Self-care tends to get a bad reputation as pampering yourself with face masks and spa days. In reality, self-care is really everything you do to take care of yourself, all of the habits you create with the goal of personal improvement or giving yourself love. When you think of self-care this way, it highlights how important a self-care routine really is. It is something so ofter overlooked, that this self-care checklist will help you create the perfect self-care routine.
Self-care isn’t selfish
Before taking the journey into your self-care routine, it is important to believe self-care isn’t selfish. Self-care is taking care of yourself so that you can show up how you want to for others, for work, and everything else in your life,
No one thinks their car is being selfish when it needs an oil change. That is non-negotiable car maintenance. Think of self-care as non-negotiable self-maintenance. You want to keep your machine running in tip-top shape.
Pillars of a self-care routine
The self-care routine checklist is made up of pillars. Each individual’s self-care routine will differ but should include something to fulfill each pillar of self-care.
Because self-care is so personal, take some time to think about what activities will fulfill these pillars for YOU specifically. For example, one person may be inspired by reading non-fiction while another person may be inspired in a high-energy workout class. The food that nourishes one person, isn’t necessarily the same food that will nourish your body.
If you are having difficulty with any self-care pillar. Try journaling about it. Ask yourself questions like: When do I feel most energized? When am I happiest? And then keep asking yourself why. This will help you discover self-care practices tailored to your custom needs.
