Welcome to my personal home gym makeover! If you’re looking for inspiration to transform your own workout space, you’ve come to the right place. I’m excited to share with you my journey of turning my dull and drab basement into a stunning fitness haven. In this post, I’ll be showcasing my Peloton treadmill, beautiful peel-and-stick floor tile, and the vintage boxing club-inspired design that has completely revitalized my home gym. So, let’s take a look at the before and after of my home gym makeover and discover how you can create your own perfect workout space!
Home Gym Before
Before making over my basement home gym, I was working out in a garage with no HVAC and on super cold days in the basement on this bike and yoga mat. Needless to say, I wasn’t exactly looking forward to my workouts in such blah and frigid conditions!
In December 2021 I splurged and purchased the Peloton treadmill, which I had been lusting after for almost 2 years. I can honestly say the Peloton treadmill has been worth every penny of the $3,000 price tag I dropped on it! I absolutely love the classes and instructors and I have stayed motivated to workout almost everyday.
Mood Board / Design Plan for Home Gym Makeover
In 2022 I finally decided it was time for a home gym makeover to turn the space into somewhere I not only enjoyed spending every morning, but also somewhere that was aesthetically pleasing for me.
My bedroom is a super feminine space and I decided to lean the opposite direction and design my home gym in a very masculine style. I was inspired by the idea of a retro boxing gym. I created this mood board for the space in Canva.
While creating the design mood board I was able to start sourcing pieces I knew I wanted to include in the makeover.

Using Familial Nostalgia in My Design Plan
Incorporating personal aspects into a design plan not only makes the space more custom, but also gives a warm sense of “home” when you are in your space.
My family has strong roots in Boston sports. My father’s uncle Eddie Pellagrini played on the Red Sox in the 1940s, so I knew I wanted to incorporate retro Red Sox paraphernalia. Growing up I also spent a lot of time going to Celtics games, so I used that as decor inspiration as well.
I highly recommend tapping into these unique family memories was decorating your spaces as well.
