Gold finishes are a topic of design conversation more often than you would think! I am constantly being asked about what finishes are timeless and how to know which are classic and which are trendy. If you’ve had this question too, don’t worry! This blog is going to walk you through the different types of gold finishes and how you can use them throughout your home for a classic and ageless look! Gold is a hot topic because it has been trendy again for long enough for it to be mainstream, which makes everyone ask if it’s going out of style. It’s a complex answer, golds fit into three overall categories when we talk about trendy vs. classic. Let’s get into it!
Cheap Gold Chachkies
If you’re strolling through your local home decor bargain store and see small gold chachkies that may already be chipping, steer clear. These are not the timeless pieces that you’re so desperately looking for even if the price tag is appealing. A big red flag to look out for is shiny or clearly painted looking shades of gold, this is not going to look elegant in your home. When searching through items don’t confuse these red flags with brushed gold which is beautiful and can be used as accents for larger accessories like a leather box with a gold clasp. That’s a classy and gorgeous look, wouldn’t you agree?
Brushed Gold Finishes
Speaking of brushed gold finishes, some of my favorite places to see these accents are on cabinet hardware, light fixtures, and even mirrors. This look isn’t considered classic or timeless but the trend is not on its way out yet. These finishes have another 5 or so years before they start to feel like an older trend. I would be comfortable adding some of these finishes to my home. I even have the chandelier below in my bedroom!

Unlacquered Brass
Unlacquered brass is never going to go out of style, it’s timeless and beautiful no matter what year you’re in! One of the amazing things about unlacquered brass is that it beautifully patinas over time. If you aren’t familiar, patina is a natural tarnish that forms on the surface of brass over time. This is especially appealing to those who like the aged look, it’s always going to look classic and will never go out of style. Unlacquered brass has a way of making your items look more high-end and beautiful. Think of a country home that Martha Stewart would own or a Nancy Meyer’s film set. They LOVE this look!

Classic Lines and Shapes
When you’re shopping for classic finishes, like the gold finishes we’ve talked about, you also want to pay attention to the lines and shapes of the pieces. The traditional aesthetic will always be timeless and classic. The below images are all brushed brass but the classic pieces really won’t ever be “out”. If you’re on a budget and brushed brass is your only option, opt for the classic and traditional pieces to add elegance and beauty to your space!

Now that you understand the different types of gold and how they will age overtime, you can go out and get some beautiful pieces for your home! Here are a few more of my thoughts on gold pieces.
