Looking for a unique and creative way to spruce up that empty wall in your home? Look no further than a DIY gallery wall! Gallery walls are an increasingly popular way to showcase a collection of art and photographs, and they can add a stylish and personalized touch to any room. Plus, creating a gallery wall yourself allows you to customize the layout and choose pieces that speak to your personal style. In this post, we’ll dive into the basics of creating a DIY gallery wall, including how to choose the perfect pieces, arrange them in a visually appealing way, and ensure your wall looks polished and put together.
In my case, I had a cavernous water closet that looked ridiculously large for no apparent reason. I figured out that creating a large-scale gallery wall that was a symmetrical set of nine would be a great way to scale down the space and not make it feels so huge.
if you’ve ever shopped for a set of art pre-framed, you know that it can add up quickly and it’s not budget-friendly. I lusted after many of the floral gallery walls I saw on sites like Ballard design, pottery barn, etc. Unfortunately, that was not in my budget for this bathroom makeover because I have more projects to do in the same bathroom so I figured out how to make a DIY Gallery Wall myself!
In this post, I am focusing on diy gallery walls that are symmetrical art sets, but I have also previously posted about my asymmetrical gallery wall. You can find that tutorial here.
Sourcing Art for Your DIY Gallery Wall
When it comes to finding art on a budget, I have one store that I always run to. Etsy is one of the best places to find art on a budget and it allows you to support small businesses and artists. I knew that I was looking for a set of nine because I needed something that would help the space not feel cavernous. I also knew that I was specifically looking for florals because I am tying it into the larger bathroom space that I’m planning on using a floral wallpaper. I wanted to wait to make my sage green paint tie in with the look of the rest of the bathroom, which was going to be preppy but also has green tiles that I am not able to remove.
To clarify, I generally like to order digital download art from Etsy, because it is the least expensive and allows you to print it on your own, wherever you like. I have found it is also the least expensive way to source art on Etsy. You can also use the digital download files over and over again. If you don’t like the idea of a digital download file, you can always order art that is printed and the seller mails it directly to you, which is a great option as well.
Here is the art that I used in my DIY gallery wall. I fell in love with this particular set because of the colors and simplicity, but there are a lot of digital download art sets from Etsy that I love.
More Options for Digital Download Gallery Wall Art:
Printing Your DIY Gallery Wall Art:
I personally choose to print my digital download art at Walgreens, because it is inexpensive, you can always find a coupon code for at least 50% off, and you can generally get your prints the same day. There are options to have it mailed to you through Walgreens and other retailers like Staples, Printify, and even more websites.
Make sure to carefully read the description in your digital download art so you know which file to download for the size of our you’re looking for. I’ve purchased art that had matted borders already included in the art and therefore did not want to use frames that had mats with them. I chose to print my art as 11 x 14 posters at Walgreens. The normal price for each poster is $9.00 but I got a 50% off code making each print $4.50 to print.
Selecting Frames For Your Gallery Wall:
When it comes to finding picture frames on a budget, I have three sources I always check. Amazon, Michaels craft store, and Target. In this case, I loved the wood look displayed in the Etsy listing and therefore was looking for something similar for my space. Michael’s had a lot of great options, but I ended up going with a set that I found on Amazon. This was the largest expense of the gallery wall, and I ended up with extra frames that I am going to use in the other part of the bathroom.
Many times you can get a height and look with your picture frames by purchasing picture frames with large mats already in them, which makes your printed art look like a higher and curated piece of art.
